Keen As Mustard The phrase "Keen as mustard" was first recorded in 1672 in a book by William Walker called 'Phraseologia Anglo-Latina...'. In the 1600's Mustard was an essential accompaniment to steak and became associated with vigour and enthusiasm because it added zest and flavour.
